clogged sink

Sinks can become clogged for a variety of reasons, the most common of which is a build-up of grease and food particles.

If your sink becomes clogged, it’s important to take action quickly to clear the obstruction and prevent water from backing up and flooding your kitchen. In this article, we’ll discuss the do’s and don’ts of clearing a clogged sink.

Do:

  • Install a drain filter. This will help to catch food particles and other debris before they have a chance to clog your sink.
  • Run hot water down the drain. This can help to loosen any grease or grime that may be causing the clog.
  • Use a plunger. A plunger can be very effective at dislodging a clog. Be sure to cover the entire drain opening with the plunger and use firm, steady pressure. The suction created by the plunger will help to break up the obstruction and clear the drain. Don’t use too much pressure, as this could damage your pipes or sink.
  • Use a plumbers’ snake. A plumber’s snake is a long, flexible coil of metal that can be inserted into the drain to reach clogs that are located further down the pipe.

Don’t:

  • Add water to a blocked drain. This will only make the clog worse and could cause water to back up and flood your kitchen.
  • Use chemical drain cleaners. These products are very corrosive and can damage your pipes. They should only be used as a last resort.
  • Pour boiling water or vinegar down the drain. Boiling water can break up some types of clogs, but it can also damage your pipes. If you choose to use boiling water, pour it slowly and carefully into the drain.
  • Put oily greasy foods down the drain. Oils and grease can solidify in your pipes and cause clogs. To avoid this, scrape any grease or oil off of dishes into the garbage before washing them in the sink.
  • Put non-food items down the drain. Things like cigarette butts, hair, and coffee grounds can all contribute to clogs. Be sure to dispose of these items in the garbage rather than down the drain.
