Maintaining your washing machine and clothes dryer isn’t just about keeping them in running condition. Maintenance also keeps your home and family safe. There are a couple of things you can do to keep both of these machines in good shape.

Replace old washing machine hoses

To do this, you should turn off the hot and cold valves and then unplug the power cord. Next, you can remove the old drain hose. You should make sure to put a tarp or towel under the supply hose to catch any leaking water.

The next step is to clean the filter screens. This will get rid of any debris and sediment buildup. After doing this, you should notice a better flow of water. The final step is to replace the hose, using 60 inches of leeway in case you need to move the machine. Don’t forget to hook the hot water hose to the hot water valve and the cold to the cold valve.

Tip: This is a great time to add a drip pan with a floor drain if you do not have one. This will help catch any leaks.

Clean the lint trap, ductwork, and vent for your dryer

Making sure your dryer and vents are clear of lint is something you should do regularly. Buildups can result in dryer fires, which are one of the most common causes of house fires.

Start with the lint trap. Pull out the screen and insert a snorkel brush into the trap. Move the tool around to make sure you get any clumps of lint. You can also use a long crevice tool and vacuum. Next, take the ductwork off of the wall and the dryer exhaust. If it is smooth, you can take it outside and clean it with a dryer-vent brush. If it is plastic or ribbed metal, you will need to replace the ductwork.

To clean the vent, start from the inside. Take a dryer-vent brush and spin it a few inches through the ductwork leading outdoors. Clean the brush periodically and repeat the process until you reach the exhaust hood. Then, go outside and clean the vent hood and vent from there. The final step is to replace everything and use aluminum tape to connect the ductwork to itself.

Hire experts to maintain your washer and dryer

The above steps are easy enough, but not everyone has the time or tools to take care of this maintenance. If this is the case for you, there are local companies that can take care of the task. You can schedule regular visits with them so that they can take care of everything for you. They may also catch issues that you would not have known about otherwise.
