Save Water And Money With These Plumbing Fixtures

Wednesday, January 18th, 2017

Your plumbing should be one of the first things you consider when looking to lower your utility bills. However, most attention around conserving resources at home is focused on energy efficiency. Many people are not aware that a wealth of savings can be found in their plumbing system as well. Here are some of the water-efficient plumbing fixtures you can start using today to save water and money.

Low-flow toilets

Low-flow toilets often use 1.28 gallons of water or less per flush. A normal-flow toilet can use as much as 6 gallons per flush. There are some new toilets on the market that offer two flush options: one for liquid waste and one for solid waste. These plumbing fixtures allow you to save even more water when flushing only liquid waste.

Sink fixtures

Federal regulations cap the flow of sink faucets at 2.2 gallons per minute. You can purchase faucets that go a step below that number with a limited output of up to 1.5 gallons per minute. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates the average family can save about 700 gallons per year by making the switch to these newer types of plumbing fixtures.

Showerheads

The average American family uses about 40 gallons a day in the shower, which is nearly 17 percent of their total household water consumption. Ultra-low-flow showerheads use about two gallons of water a minute. Purchasing one of these showerheads will help your family become more water-efficient as they go about their day.

Look for the WaterSense label

The federal government maintains the Energy Star program to label products that are energy efficient. Some are not aware that a similar program exists for water-efficient plumbing fixtures. The EPA runs the WaterSense program to spotlight products that are water-efficient. The program also provides tips on how to adjust your water consumption. Products that receive a WaterSense certification must conserve at least 20 percent more water as their standard counterparts.
