The weather is already warming up and air conditioners are being used more and more. If you haven’t had your commercial HVAC/R system checked, or if it is struggling, now is the time to take action! Here are some tips to help you prepare before it gets too hot.

Clean your system

The best place to start is cleaning your system. This is true for both indoor and outdoor units. Commercial HVAC/R systems are usually more complicated than residential units, so it can be easier to hire a professional to take care of the cleaning. You can clear out debris like plants, trash, and clutter to help make the tech’s job easier, as well as prevent dust and dirt from entering the system.

Cleaning the ductwork is also important, especially in restaurants and industrial settings. Months of build up can block airflow and even break the internal components of the system.

Replace the air filters

This step is something you should be doing regularly throughout the year. But, if you haven’t changed the air filter(s) in your commercial system, you can do it now! Doing this will prevent air flow blockages and keep your entire property at a more comfortable temperature. Changing air filters can also improve efficiency and the lifespan of the system.

Check the thermostat

If your commercial HVAC/R system is in great condition, but the thermostat isn’t, you will still run into problems. The first step is to check the batteries. Then, you can dust the outside and inside of the thermostat. Finally, be sure that it is operating correctly by testing the system. Tip: If you haven’t used your air conditioner yet, you may want to have it checked and maintained the same day as the thermostat.

Don’t start your air conditioner yet, unless you have to

It is best to avoid starting your air conditioner until it has been completely checked over. But, this isn’t always possible, especially for commercial properties that deal with large amounts of heat, like restaurants or industrial facilities. If you haven’t, here are some reasons why you shouldn’t start that AC up just yet.

  1. Dust and dirt have built up while the system hasn’t been in use. Think about how long the air conditioner has been sitting.
  2. The system may break down when you start running it constantly. This will be extremely uncomfortable on the hottest days of the summer months.
  3. Tuning up your system first can prevent refrigerant leaks, frozen and dirty coils, electrical issues, and blown motor fans.
  4. Checking your HVAC system before starting it can help you catch issues with the thermostat or dangerous electrical problems.
