How To Install Compression Fittings On Copper Plumbing Pipes
Tuesday, March 15th, 2016
Common in most households, you may have several compression fittings in your home right now. This type of coupling is economical, reliable, and easy to install. Compression fittings are used to connect a pipe to a valve or fixture; they can also be used to connect two pipes together. This product has three parts including the compression ring, compression nut, and compression seat.
To install compression fittings on copper plumbing pipes, you will need a compression fitting, emery cloth, and two crescent wrenches. For the steps below, you can use a shut-off valve as a compression fitting.
Clean the end of the copper plumbing pipe
You should begin installing compression fittings on copper plumbing by using the emery cloth to clean the end of the copper pipe. This cleaning removes any debris and dirt from the area.
Attach the compression nut and slide the ring onto the copper plumbing pipe
Your next step is to attach the compression nut onto the copper plumbing pipe. You should remember to lubricate the nut threads prior to the installation. The threaded, open end should be facing the end of the copper plumbing pipe. After you have attached this nut, slide the ring onto the end of the pipe.
Slide the nut and the ring toward the compression fitting
The threaded end on the valve fitting should be placed over the copper pipe’s end. Then, slide the nut and the ring toward the compression fitting. The nut should be threaded onto the fitting until it is hand-tight.
Tighten the nut onto the fitting
To tighten the compression nut onto the fitting, use the two crescent wrenches. You will place one over the fitting and the other over the nut. By tightening this part, you will crash the ring onto the copper plumbing pipe, creating a seal between the fitting and pipe.
You might also be able to save an old fitting that has started to leak over time. You can save this fitting by loosening the nut slightly and retightening it more than the original position. Loosening the nut breaks any resistance caused by corrosion and time, allowing you more room to tighten it.
