Tuesday, January 31st, 2023
Water leaks might not seem like a big deal initially, but they can quickly develop into expensive repairs. If you have a water leak in your home or business, you should first identify the source. Finding the source is necessary before you can take steps to address the issue. Here is a quick guide on how to find the source of a water leak.
Check Your Water Meter
If you think you have a leak, the first thing you should do is check the water meter. The meter keeps track of your water usage, so if it is abnormally high, you probably have a leak somewhere. Turn off all water-using appliances and fixtures, and check the meter. Come back an hour later to check it again. If the number on the meter has changed, you have a leak on your hands.
Check the Yard for Green Spots
Another way to identify a leak is to check your yard outside. If you notice any grass spots that are extra green and lush, it is likely because of a broken water line under the ground. You’ll need to call a professional plumber to fix an underground water line.
Inspect Appliances & Fixtures
Another way to find the source is to look at all your appliances that connect to your water lines. Very often, water leaks are from a broken appliance or fixture. Common appliances that can be the source of a water leaks include:
- Washing machine
- Dishwasher
- Refrigerator/Freezer
- Water heater
- Toilet
If you can’t find broken appliances or fixtures, the problem is most likely leaking pipes.
Look for Signs of a Leak
If you still haven’t found the source of the leak, go around the building looking for tell-tale signs of water damage. Some of the most common signs include:
- Discoloration in walls
- Standing water on the floor
- Peeling wallpaper
- Soft, spongy walls or ceiling
- Dripping sounds
- Musty smells
Most of the time, these signs should be relatively close to the source of the leak. For example, if you find a large discolored patch in the ceiling, the leak is probably coming from an appliance or leaking pipe just above it.
