How To Clean HVAC Filters In 4 Steps

Friday, August 5th, 2016

Dirt, dust and debris are removed from the air thanks to your HVAC filter. This filter operates as the air is pulled through the unit, cools and returns it back to the living space. The particles in the air build up in the device over time, leading to decreased efficiency or failure if the filter is not cleaned. You need to remember to clean this HVAC product regularly for the best performance possible. The following steps will help you maintain a clean, efficient HVAC filter.

Gather your cleaning tools

All you need is a few household items to clean your HVAC filter. Gather soap and a sprayer to attach to your garden hose and have them ready.

Remove the HVAC filter from the unit

Next, you need to remove the filter. To remove the device, turn power to the HVAC unit off. Then locate where the return ductwork joins to the side. This area is where you will find the HVAC filter. You can simply pull the product straight out.

Rinse the filter with soap and warm water

Take the HVAC filter outside, use your hands to rub it with soap, and spray it with warm water. Be sure to coat the entire device with water and soap. Rinse it with warm water to remove the soap residue and dirt. Look specifically for areas of excess grime. Repeatedly spray the device until it is completely clean.

Put the HVAC filter back inside the unit

Slide the device back into its place inside the unit. The airflow arrow on the HVAC filter should point toward the unit. Now you can turn the power to the unit back on.

Repeat the cleaning process about every 90 days. If you have several pets, you may want to clean the filter more often. Pet hair can build up and clog the device. Do not clean disposable filters, as they are meant to be thrown away after one use. As you make this cleaning process a habit, you will have better air quality in your home.

By following these steps, you can improve your air quality and prevent HVAC unit failure. If you need assistance with your HVAC system, contact the experts at Allen’s Tri-State Mechanical Inc.
