3 Plumbing Maintenance Tips For Spring
Wednesday, February 22nd, 2017
Spring is a great time for plumbing check-ups and repairs. By checking the condition of the plumbing throughout your home, you can potentially avoid expensive problems. There are some quick things you can do as spring arrives, including checking your plumbing for leaks and checking your toilet for issues.
Check your plumbing for leaks
The first thing you should do is check your faucets for leaks. The occurrence of leaks is common in colder climates, often because hoses have been left on the bib, the faucet outside of your home, for the winter. The hose bib connects your water hose to your plumbing. If the water supply pipe freezes, it may expand and crack. This issue will cause your pipes to leak and it will have to be replaced.
Check the sump pump for proper functionality
As spring weather begins to set in, check to make sure your sump pump is ready for some hard work. If you have never laid eyes on your sump pump, test it by pouring some water into the sump pit. The pump will kick on in a few seconds, allowing a flow of water before turning itself off automatically. If your pump does not function this way, call a professional plumbing company to have the pump inspected.
Check your toilets
You should also check to see if your toilet is leaking. You could try placing a few drops of food coloring in your toilet tank. If you have a leak, the color will end up in the bowl within half an hour. Check to make sure your toilet is flushing correctly as well. If you have to shake the handle or hold it down for an extended period, you should prepare to replace parts or call a plumber. Typically the parts associated with this section of your toilet are inexpensive and replacing them could save you money on your water bill.
